Developing the perfect commercial signage for your business can be a complicated task. There are multiple design elements that need to be taken into consideration, and even then, you have to combine all these components to create an amazing sign that not only reaches your customers but also matches your brand.

One of the most critical elements to consider is signage height. In order to determine the right size for your needs, there are several factors that you will want to keep in mind.

Let the dependable, full-service commercial signage experts at HiWay Neon Signs give you the lowdown on signage height and other elements so that you can make the best decision for your business as possible.

For Your Storefront Signage, Placement Equals Size & Height

This is probably the most important factor to consider when determining the height of your commercial signage. Naturally, where your sign is going to be placed will determine your sign’s dimensions and how large its letters can be.

If your brick-and-mortar establishment stands alone, then you’ll likely have a few options of where you can place your sign and how large it can be. On the other hand, if your establishment is located at a shopping center with multiple businesses, you’re likely to have limited options and may need to make adjustments according to the guidelines or requirements set in place by the property owners.

Research suggests that the average distance a driver can see your sign while traveling at 25-30 miles per hour is at least 155 feet. However, the faster traffic is traveling, the longer the distance, and this increases if the sign is parallel to the roadway.

Factors That Determine the Height of Your Commercial Signage

Once you’ve figured out the roadway distance, you’ll want to do the math on the height. A bare minimum of 7 feet high off the ground is the standard so that travelers can easily see the sign when driving by.

But that’s only the basic standard.

It bears repeating: if you want your signage to be legible to travelers from a distance, you’ll want to increase the height of the signage based on the speed of nearby roadways. For instance, if you’re considering placing your sign off Expressway 83 in McAllen, where vehicles travel at around 70 mph, your sign should be at least 75 feet off the ground.

If you’re looking to place your signage on Ware Road, where speed limits can reach as low as 35 mph, the sign should be at least 20 feet off the ground.

Commercial Signage Design Elements to Consider

When determining signage design, there are additional elements you’ll want to consider alongside the sign’s height. One major design element that needs to be perfect is letter height. This will affect visibility and determine where your sign should be placed for maximum readability.

The agreed upon standard for letter-size is for every inch you have, you need 10 feet for readability. For instance, 9-inch high letters should be readable from at least 90 feet away.

Another critical design element that can have a huge impact on readability is the font you choose for your sign. Of course, certain fonts are easy to read, while others such as script (cursive) fonts can be hard to read no matter the distance.

While business owners may have their preference for fonts, especially if considering branding, there are several fonts that work well for large-format signs, including:

  • Helvetica
  • Futura
  • Bebas
  • Avenir
  • Proxima Nova
  • Arial
  • Gil Sans
  • Cooper Black

Color is also a key factor in sign visibility. The right contrasting color combination can really make your sign stand out. Two of the most popular contrasting color schemes are white lettering against a black background, or black lettering against a white or light blue background.

Keep color in mind when designing your sign, as you want to make sure that the color scheme allows for maximum visibility.

And last, but certainly not least, consider the lighting conditions of your sign. You’ll want to place your sign in an area where it will receive plenty of light or with added lighting so that it can be seen at night.
